Amongst the Embracing Sound (ES) program’s continued advocacy work, throughout 2009 we have collaborated with Art Monthly Australia (AMA) to produce an edition entirely dedicated to the Arts of Sound. Due for release in November 2009, this AMA ‘sonic takeover’ edition has been guest edited by noted San Francisco based writer, theorist and academic Douglas Kahn, and features essays by Australian writers and practitioners discussing the arts of sound and its many contexts. The issue contains a complementary DVD featuring commissioned works by Philip Samartzis, Paul Carter, Robin Fox, and collaborators Joyce Hinterding/David Haines, along with additional previously published audio visual material by Australian artists.
In addition, from late October and throughout November 2009 ANAT and AMA will also be co-hosting Kahn for a national lecture tour to five capital cities to promote the AMA and Australian arts of sound to a broad range of arts communities. This lecture tour will give our visual, music, film and performing arts industries the opportunity to directly engage with Kahn, one of the most significant sound arts theorists in the past 25 years.
Many of the activities associated with the lecture tour will also provide important networking and professional development opportunities for Australian practitioners. These include the 2009 Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference (2009 THNMF) in Perth, where Kahn will give a keynote and participate in critical dialogue with conference proceedings that include 12 new research papers by Australian sound artists and theorists.
In Brisbane, there will be somewhat of a mini ‘Wireless Imagination’ festival with Kahn engaging deeply with Brisbane’s cultural constituents through a number of activities such as; the presentation of several talks structured to suit unique environmental settings around the State Library of Queensland and its cultural precinct; the co-curation of a screening program with Brisbane based practitioners/curators Joel Stern, Sally Golding and Danni Zuvela; a catalogue essay discussing Kahn’s most recent research; and his attendance at several performance nights arranged specifically for his Brisbane visit.
Kahn’s presence will also be felt in two of Australia’s major collecting and cultural organisations: The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and The National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. The lecture tour will culminate in Melbourne, with Kahn one of the high calibre international presenters at ANAT’s Super Human: Revolution of the Species curatorial masterclass, and a keynote speaker at Re:live, the Third International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology. Following Kahn’s keynote ANAT and AMA will be hosting a post publication party, ensuring the resonance of Australian arts of sound will continue its reverberation around the globe.

Sarah is an artist and independent curator who based herself in regional NSW for the past eight years. Since 2003, she’s curated experimental sound and media arts projects for the artist-run-initiative Wagga Space Program and a range of publicly funded organizations. Along with her ESP responsibilities, Sarah is currently a PhD candidate with Queensland University of Technology.
